imageCLASS LBP623Cdw Series Printer Reviews–
The Canon imageClass LBP622Cdw is designed for use in small or home offices. While it’s a simple and no-nonsense machine, it prints well overall and is small enough to fit in tight spaces.
Small Space
The LBP622Cdw is built to fit in tight spaces. Measuring 11.5 by 17.2 by 16.7 inches (HWD) and weighing 35.2 pounds. The controls consist of several buttons and status LEDs, a set of arrows, and the corresponding OK button for navigating the browsing menu on a five-line monochrome LCD panel. Using the control panel can be a bit of a hassle, as you have to navigate the menus using an old-school monochrome LCD.
The paper handling on the Canon LBP622Cdw consists of one 250-sheet drawer and a single-sheet bypass tray for one-time printing of envelopes and other off-size media. The printed page lands in an indentation at the top of the machine that serves as a 75-page output bed.
Canon has not published the maximum monthly duty cycle for the LBP622Cdw yet, but has a recommended monthly print volume rating of up to 2,500 pages.
Connectivity, Mobile Software, and Security
The latter is a peer-to-peer network protocol for connecting mobile devices to printers without the presence of an intermediate network or router.
Other cellular connectivity options include Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria Print Service, and the Canon Print Business app for Android and iOS. The Print Business app connects your organization’s smartphones and tablets to printers and acts as a bridge between the LBP622Cdw supported cloud sites, which, as of this writing, are only Google Drive and Dropbox, in addition to Google Cloud Print.
The LBP622Cdw’s safety features are the standard for entry-level color laser printers. Additional security features include standard network encryption and other protocols, such as limiting traffic through IP and Mac address filtering.
Initial Level Print Speed
For the next part of our benchmarking regimen, I printed a colorful and complex suite of Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint business documents, full-page spreadsheets, charts and graphs, and a flyer containing several different types of business charts. Then, I combined these results with the results from printing a 12-page text document on the previous test and got a score of 12.9ppm to scramble our entire test document set.
Nearly Perfect Output
It’s rare that I come across a Canon printer, laser or inkjet, that doesn’t print well, and the LBP622Cdw is no exception. But, honey, nothing’s perfect. As you would expect from any laser comparable to its toner, this laser produces nicely shaped, pure text down to about 6 points. The LBP622Cdw text output is very close to the quality of the stylists.
And the photos I print, ranging from 4-by-6-inch to 8-by-10-inch, come out in great clarity and detail for a laser machine – not what you would expect from one of Canon’s six-ink photos – Pixmas Centric, but still impressive. However, I found some minor issues in some PowerPoint handouts. I saw a distinct, but unsightly, outline on one of our test slides which had a dark green gradient background. Many of the printers we tested had problems reproducing these slides.
I also saw some faint banding across one of our full-page Excel charts which contained an all-black background but was barely detectable to the point that I had to hunt to find it, and most likely saw it just because I knew where to look. In contrast, the print quality of the LBP622Cdw is almost perfect.
Solid Initial Level Laser Printing
As an entry-level printer, the Canon imageClass LBP622Cdw is a respectable one. While it doesn’t have the fast print speeds or the robust cellular and cloud support of the Brother HL-L3270CDW Editor’s Choice, it produces excellent output and is small enough to fit even in the narrowest of offices. If long-term operating costs are a concern, you should think about paying more for a higher volume laser printer like the Brother HL-L8360CDW or consider an inkjet alternative like the Epson WF-C5290.
